Year 9 and 10 Cultural Capital Day

Dear Parents / Carers, 

Cultural Capital Day: Years 9 & 10 – Wednesday 2nd April 2025 

At the end of module 4, the Academy will partake in the second of three Cultural Capital events this academic year. Our Cultural Capital days and week (at the end of the academic year), are a true highlight of our Academy calendar. These days offer students enriching experiences and the opportunity to participate in exciting activities outside their usual classroom learning experience in line with National Curriculum guidance. The second of these days will take place on Wednesday 2nd April.

Your child can choose one of the following trips and visits. All of these trips take place on the same day.

  1. Gravity, £20 (payable in 2 instalments). Students will exercise their sporting skills at a popular climbing and trampoline park. Students should arrive at the Academy for 8.25am in their Academy P.E. kit and trainers. They will travel via public transport to Bluewater to take part in a trampolining and climbing session and will return to the Academy at approximately 2.20pm, depending on the frequency of buses.
  2. Arsenal F.C. football Stadium Tour, £21 (payable in 2 instalments). Students will visit the world-famous Emirates Stadium, home to the once-local team, Arsenal F.C., to explore the team’s history and understand the workings of a global football team. Students should arrive at the Academy at 9am and will return to the Academy at approximately 2.20pm depending on the frequency of trains. 
  3. London’s City Hall, free. Students will visit London’s City Hall to gain first-hand knowledge of the heart of politics at the Greater London Authority, learning how the city is run. Students will travel to London via the Cable Cars situated at North Greenwich. Students should arrive at the Academy at 8.25am and will return to the Academy at approximately 2.20pm depending on the frequency of the cable cars and buses.
  4. London Transport Museum, free. This cross-curricular trip links the history of travel in London with the lasting legacy of design and innovation. Students will travel back in time through the streets and listen to personal recounts of Londoners and its many visitors. Linking to their curriculum, students will explore the stories of how the transport industry supported the war efforts in London. Students should arrive at the Academy at 8.25am and will return to the Academy at approximately 2.20pm, depending on the frequency of trains
  5. The Globe Theatre, free. Students will partake in a workshop that explains and helps students understand the themes and ideas in one of Shakespeare’s most performed plays. Students will also tour the theatre and explore theatrical skills, developing their confidence in public speaking and performance. Students should arrive at the Academy at 8.25am and will return to the Academy at approximately 2.20pm, depending on the frequency of trains.
  6. Tower of London, free. Linking to their History curriculum, students will visit the Tower of London to explore the history of the monarchy and the legacy of the building that has witnessed some of Britain’s most dramatic moments in history, starting with our Medieval history. Students should arrive at the Academy at 8.25am and will return to the Academy at approximately 2.20pm, depending on the frequency of trains and buses.
  7. Neasden Temple, free. To develop students’ knowledge of global religions and beliefs, as studied in their Religious Studies lessons; students will get a first-hand experience of the Hindu faith in practice. Students should arrive at the Academy for 8.25am and will return to the Academy at approximately 2.20pm, depending on the frequency of trains and buses.
  8. Thames Barrier, free. Students visiting the local site of the Thames Barrier will develop their geographical and scientific understanding of one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world. Students will be given a presentation on river usage past and present, wildlife, and urban geography: towns, counties, rural geography tributaries. Students should arrive at the Academy for 8.25am and will return to the Academy at approximately 2.20pm, depending on the frequency of buses.
  9. Bank of England Museum. Students will practise their mathematical skills and experience the heart of the United Kingdom’s financial institution at the Bank of England museum. They will learn about money, the economy, the history of the Bank of England, and how the economy works on a global and local scale.  Students should arrive at the Academy for 8.25am and will return to the Academy at approximately 2.20pm, depending on the frequency of buses.

All trips will commence at the Academy, and students will return to the Academy at the end of the trip so that they can be registered before being dismissed. If a trip returns before the end of the Academy day, students will be dismissed upon arrival back to the Academy. Students will travel via public transport utilising the free travel offer for students from Transport for London. 

Only students attending the Gravity trampoline park trip should wear their Academy P.E. kit. All other students should wear their normal Academy uniform and are advised to wear appropriate clothing for the weather and travelling on public transport. Students will also need to bring a packed lunch, however those eligible for a free school meal will have this provided before they depart the Academy. Spending money for souvenirs is to be kept to a reasonable amount.
