Dear Parents/Carers,
Talk the Talk
I hope this letter finds you well and that your child has had a great start to their secondary school journey here at Leigh Academy Halley.
On Monday 16th September, Year 7 students will be involved in a transition workshop designed to support them in their first few weeks at the Leigh Academy Halley. This workshop will be hosted and led by specially trained leaders from Talk The Talk, in partnership with the Jack Petchey Foundation. Talk The Talk has been working with students aged 9 to 19 since 2013, and has supported over 190,000 secondary school students across the country building confidence in young people. These workshops aim to engage students using oracy-based activities and strategies that will develop greater self-confidence and resilience to support a successful transition from primary to secondary school. Within these workshops, each student will speak in front of his or her peers on several occasions. They will also:
- Create an individual transition profile.
- Talk about how they feel about the first few weeks of school.
- Be partnered with a new friend – and each will interview and then introduce their partner to their peers through structured talk.
- Identify what they see as the opportunities and challenges facing them in their new school.
- Work within small groups to present a structured talk about these opportunities and challenges and suggest the means to embrace and overcome them.
- Identify their goals for the coming year in their new school and present a structured talk to their peers about them.
Students arrive to their timetabled classroom at 8.25am on Monday 16th September and will be supported by their usual class teacher to their workshop space. Year 7 students do not need to bring their PE kit with them on Monday 16th September.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Academy if you would like further information about this workshop.
Yours faithfully,
Mrs Hayley Panton | Deputy Head of Turing School
